some enjoyed, some not, all watched

I’ve been collecting the movies we’ve seen over the past 4 months in a draft post and, for whatever reason, I haven’t remembered to publish it. This, being the last day of the year, I thought it was time to get this out of draft and commit it to the 2007 archives. As usual, these are starred out of a possible five.

I hope your 2008 is filled with 5-star viewing!

remember how I said we’ve seen a bunch of films recently?

It’s a good thing I keep a running list of these (in draft, always) because the chances of me remembering even a fraction of this list? Slim to none. A quick check of the film archives reveals that this list represents all the movies we’ve seen since February of this year, although the renting pace has definitely ramped up in recent weeks. And I’m almost positive that I’ve forgotten a few. Still, plenty to choose from here including a healthy dose of DTMs (a near-favourite genre), the first 5-star rating in a while (The Departed knocked me over, blew me away, then knocked me over again), some good, old fashioned serial killer goodness, and a classic (not until recently did I watch The Godfather from start to finish; I’ve seen various bits on various occasions but the only bit that ever stayed with me was the horse head bit. Ha!). So, anyway, here you go, all starred out of a possible five, as usual.

Children of Men **
The Illusionist ***
Invincible ***
Breach **
The Prestige ***
The Departed *****
Blood Diamond ****
The Good Shepard ***
Rocky Balboa ***
Babel ****
The Last King of Scotland ****
The Queen ***
Deja Vu **
Hannibal Rising **
The Hitcher **
Saw III *
Fracture **
Vacancy *
Street Thief ***
The Good German **
The Godfather ****
Letters from Iwo Jima ****
The Guardian **
In Pot We Trust ****
Zodiac ****
The Hunt for the BTK Killer *
Disturbia **
The Bourne Ultimatum ****

diversions for a quiltmaker

What else can you possibly do when you’re sitting on the couch, quilting, eating cookies, and drinking tea for hours on end? Why you watch movies, of course! As many as you can! Here’s what we watched over the holidays, starred out of a possible five:

The mister was a fantastic enabler throughout the quilting process, running out for DVDs and refreshing the refreshments when necessary. A crucial contribution!

And, you? Seen any good movies lately? What’s on in the theatre these days? I’m so out of touch.

ruination

I’m sorry for all the memes, truly I am. As you can probably tell, I’m struggling a bit. Perhaps I have over-blogged? Perhaps I am blogged-out? Whatever the term, these last five posts are going to be difficult, and to-day is a bit of a cheat, isn’t it? Blogging about how difficult it is to blog probably doesn’t count as blogging at all.

The mister has Tristan & Isolde on in the background while I am trying to do professorial things on my laptop. It looks like a film I might actually enjoy but, as I was explaining to some friends yesterday, I am eternally ruined for films set in the Middle Ages (or based on Medieval themes, literature, &c.) as a result of a course I took as an undergrad, entitled “The Middle Ages and Film”. It seemed like a good idea at the time (Medieval Lit being my specialty and all) but four months of feminist deconstruction of film will leave one utterly incapable of enjoying any period piece. And now, when I look up from my screen, all I can think is “Objectifying male gaze! For shame!”

Ruined.

view from my office

view from my office

I might not have A Plan but I have settled into A Routine:

8.30 ish: wake up, shower, don loungy attire, think about course materials
9.00: turn on music, brew pot of tea
9.05-9.45: read email/Bloglines while drinking tea/eating banana & thinking about course materials
9.45-1.30: settle into office, work on course materials
1:30-2.00: munch on lunch while working on course materials
3.30: brew tea, work on course materials while brewing/drinking tea
3.30-7: work on course materials
7.00-bedtime: eat supper, talk to the mister, while thinking about the course materials that will be worked on to-morrow

I am thinking, now, of a certain scene in The Shining and I’m almost positive, friends, that you know what scene that is. Hint: there are no axes involved.

But speaking of movies, here’s what we’ve consumed lately:

And now, I am off to wait impatiently for the mister to come home (while thinking about.. oh, you get the idea) with steamy & fragrant take-out from the best roti shop in this fine city.

Wishing you days more interesting and varied than mine.

distracted

The Purge of Friday Afternoon started in good earnest but ground to a premature halt on account of The Worst Allergy Attack of All Time. It was terrible, I can’t remember ever sneezing that much in such a short time span. Ever. Sad that I have to take an antihistamine to clean this house. Sad and ridiculous.

But, whatever. Let’s not talk about that anymore. Let’s talk, instead, about the films we’ve watched lately.

Two trips to the theatre in this batch, for Over the Hedge and Lady in the Water, neither of which were particularly good or recommended. The Matador was oddly entertaining, Goodnight, and Good Luck and The World According to Bush were brilliant, and the rest I barely remember. This weekend has been about The Alien Quadrilogy, which we own and which we’ve watched countless times before, I can never get enough of all four of those films.

Updated later: I almost forgot that we rented Final Destination 3 on Friday night. A fabulous dead-teenager-movie! Three stars.

tomato, tomah-to

Last weekend, I sent the mister to the video store to rent Goodnight, and Goodluck, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and The Snow Walker. He came home with 16 Blocks, Freedomland, Water, and Match Point.

I think we might have a communication issue.

Turns out, I really liked 50% of what he brought home (not so much with the other 50%). We’ve watched a few more movies since then (I can’t believe we’ve watched this many movies in a week, 4-day weekend or not), here they are in order of rating:

of course i’ve been working

Verily I say to you: do NOT watch Wolf Creek and Hostel back-to-back, for it will inevitably lead to all manner of terrifyingly gripping dreams of rusty knives and sociopaths. Verily.

I think we’re in a movie-rut. There’s been an almighty amount of mediocrity lately (except for Man on Fire. Have you seen it? It’s good!), probably because we’ve turned into lazy film-watchers, tuning in exclusively to TMN and Pay-Per-View for our film-fix.

So tell me, dear readers, what should we watch next? Clearly, we need your help. And while we might be lazy film-watchers, I think I can probably muster a trip to Blockbuster, whereas a trip to the movie theatre is out of the question. Verily.
