I haven’t seen a lot of blog-chatter on Jon Stewart’s hosting job at the Oscars last night. Did you watch the show? What did you think?
commonplace, since 2002

I did watch — for the first time in years, and basically just for the sake of Jon. The show was quite tame, with very little excitement of any kind, good or bad. I thought Jon Stewart was fairly low-energy, and while he did get some good jokes in, and a few good reactions to events, he didn’t really shine. He certainly wasn’t controversial or offensive, as I gather some people expected (though I didn’t, really).
I’ve seen some poor reviews and some middling ones, so I think the reaction was basically tepid, which matches the overall feeling of the evening.

I also watched it, and felt the whole show was very boring this year. I like Jon Stewart but felt it just wasn’t him at his best.

I thought it was the most boring Oscars yet. I had high hopes for Jon Stewart but I think he really disappointed. Not likely that he’ll be invited back in IMHO.
Love your site BTW

I think we need to give Stewart some slack. It was his first time, and we couldn’t expect him to move Daily Show-type humour to the front line of the Academy Awards ceremony. Really, it’s a no-win situation for any host, and while the show was somewhat boring, it wasn’t Stewart’s fault. The music playing over every award winner’s acceptance speech was annoying and offensive, and detracted from each winner’s moment. Stewart did the best he could under the circumstances, and consider that The Daily Show, for all its brilliance, is watched by maybe 2 million Americans each day. So most people watching him as Oscar host had not much of a frame of reference for him to being with. I hope they ask him back.
The show was boring and without much surprise, except for Crash winning BP.

I loved Jon Stewart and I LOVED Ben Stiller, too.

I agree, it was pretty lame – save for Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep’s little act for Robert Altman. That was awesome.
