Four mostly unrelated things happened over the past week to bring a new bag into existence:

  • A metre’s worth of funky, retro print fabric arrived in the mail (the result of a successful eBay auction).
  • I rediscovered the Jordy Bag on craftster and felt the draw almost immediately.
  • That other Amanda, the far more talented one, posted a picture of the bags she’s been making lately. Once again, immediate draw.
  • The rain finally stopped. The sun finally came out. I started feeling burdened by the heavy messenger bag that got me through the winter.

It was a cosmic inevitability:

circles & sprockets!

And to satisfy the bizarre attraction of peeking inside someone’s bag (I am oddly addicted to these Flickr tags):

stripes!

I used a combination of the Jordy Bag tutorial and Mariko’s tote tutorial. I’m mostly pleased with the way it turned out, although I think that might have more to do with the fabric (I’m captivated by those circles and sprockets!) than the actual bag construction (although I am pretty proud that I pulled off the pockets & key holder!). I was going for a much bigger bag but my lacklustre measuring and cutting skills resulted in the lining being much smaller than the outer fabric, so I sized down accordingly. And, hello interfacing! I think we’re going to become fast friends.

I LOVE it!! That fabric is gorgeous, but so is your sewing! The shape is great and all the pockets–yay!! I think more of these are in your future.

And don’t you be throwing around the “more talented Amanda” ’cause I’m just going to throw that right back at YOU!

I can’t *believe* you’re making bags with lining, interfacing and inside pockets after sewing for only a month on a toy machine! You almost make me jealous!

Sweet bag! It turned out great! You know, I have that same fabric. Does yours have lycra in it? I am hoping to make some sort of dress/shift.
