Carnival, Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday, Fat Tuesday. Am I missing any? Also, feast day of Cuthman, patron saint of bachelors, poverty, and shepards.
Lately I have been dreaming of heat. Heavy, stifling, turbid heat, the kind of heat in which I’d rather like to vacation (currently), with dense, soupy air, wispy dresses and shoeless feet, drinking mint juleps and reclining under a canopy of leaves. A Good dream, for February.
If you have ever wondered why black olives are canned and green olives are bottled, go here.
I have never wondered that, though as a child I toured an olive packing plant somewhere in California. Maybe that detail was covered.
I’ve also toured a maraschino cherry plant, but I never wondered why there are red ones and green ones, and what the heck is the difference, until right now. Thanks to a site with a lot of annoying popups that I’m not going to link to, I learned that red ones are supposed to be almond flavored and green are minty. Crazy!
Please keep having those warm weather kinda dreams. It will be here eventually…

Black olives come in a jar here (Europe), and sometimes you can find both green and black in vacuum-sealed plastic pouches. I saw canned Brussels sprouts today — yech. And for your hot daydream, we found a scorpion in our house last night, a little guy about 2cm long. Yeesh!
