Spellbound (2002)

I’ve always been a grammar/spelling geek (especially spelling) so I knew I needed to watch this film. It was neat. I was a bit worried that it would be the intellectual equivalent of a pageant (a la Jon-Benet), and in a small way it was, but it was nice to see parents largely reacting positively to their kids’ failure (“I’m just happy he got this far” &c.) The pressure to study, get past a certain round, get on ESPN, get past the whole thing so they could be normal kids again, was pretty incredible, and it was good to simply see a bunch of kids who were very smart and mostly well-adjusted.
