pattern folly

Thanks for all the positive comments on the site. One never knows how one’s readers will react to site changes, but you lot have been all kindness and delight. I am a lucky little blogger, yes I am.
I’m beginning to cultivate a real appreciation for a well-written knitting pattern. The pattern I’m currently working on makes a lot of assumptions that nascent knitters, like me, need all sorts of help with. For example, I knitted most of the front of the vest without much ado, but as soon as I got to the armhole shaping, I was confronted with this:I can cast off just fine, and I’ve read enough how-to-read-a-knitting-pattern books and guides to get all the abbreviations, but what had me stumped was this: what do I do with the rest of the row once I’ve bound off the required 5 stitches? Seems obvious enough to the experienced knitter (i.e.: you continue the pattern, just bind off 5 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows), but I struggled with this blatant assumption until my grandma, uber-knitting-mentor, and the superlative local knitting group, intervened and provided all necessary clarification. No one appreciates the social dependance of the craft more than I!
And finally, I signed up for Secret Pal 2 yesterday. 2 of my favourite things rolled into one delicious treat: yarn and the postal service. It’s win-win, folks. You should sign up too.
