Finding available audiobooks at my public library is something of a Herculean feat. Because audiobooks cost so much (this one retails at $90), the library usually buys just the one copy of each title, which means that holds lists run for years for new releases and pop classics. So coming by an audiobook I want to read usually involves a whole lot of browsing (in the library, not the catalogue), some finger-crossing, and a healthy dose of serendipity. Most often I have to settle for b-list choices, like this one. And all of this is to say that I didn’t really want to read this book, it was one of those that happened to be turned in as I was signing out some others, and after 10 long hours into it, 4 hours short of the conclusion, I pulled the plug. I don’t have any sort of lofty criticism for the book, I just thought it was boring. I found Louis (the vampire being interviewed, Brad Pitt’s character for those who saw the 1994 Neil Jordan film) to be completely unsympathetic, the interview was a long yawn, and the interviewer was an unbelievable non-entity. I like to think that I have enough sense to understand why most books become bestsellers, even when they are clearly not for me, but this one escapes me.
