I dislike the western. Truly, deeply, madly dislike it. I haven’t even seen The Unforgiven for pete’s sake, and that one has accolades coming out the ying yang. I’m not into dust, leather, horses getting shot, and “l’ill lady”s, that’s just the way it’s always been for me. So imagine my surprise when I sat down to watch this with the mister, groaning and moaning throughout the first half hour, only to have him walk out the room to prepare supper and being wholly unable to change the channel. This is a good film. It’s probably not a good western, if you like westerns that is, and I don’t as you might already have surmised. But it’s a decent little story, I actually felt for poor James Van Der Beek’s character, chin, forehead and all, and laughed at Ashton Kutcher’s dorky antics, that kid cracks me up. I dislike Dylan McDermott about as much as I dislike the western but he died in the end so I was happy, I cried no tears for his overacted, inconsistently-accented character. I wouldn’t pay money to watch this film, but if it’s on TMN on a Saturday night when you’ve got nothing else to do and the hockey game is not going well for your team, I’d recommend it. (For the record, the hockey game went really well for my team, but still, I watched it).
