This is one of those films I’ve only ever seen in bits and pieces on cable TV and until now I thought I had done just fine piecing it all together. It turns out that I haven’t ever seen the whole first hour because none of it was remotely familiar when I watched it, finally, in its entirety last night. If you like films set in unchartered landscapes (you know, space, underwater, etc.) with unidentified beings, killer special effects and an earnest love story as a sub-plot, The Abyss is a classic.
