I’ve always liked Mike Moore. I watched TV Nation when it was still on, I rented Roger & Me, and while I haven’t yet seen Bowling for Columbine, I plan to as soon as it comes out on video. And I’m almost certain that I will like it. I liked this book too, it’s a whole lot of caustic satire squeezed between the covers, one long ballyhoo that is pure Moore in great iconoclastic form, all the way down to the lax grammar and SCREAMING CAPS! I shook my head in appalled disbelief and chuckled in all the right places, but I was also reservedly concerned about this book’s popularity on the bestseller lists. Moore is legendary for massaging the real poop for the purpose of cinematic/literary effect and far be it for me to criticise the time-honoured use of hyperbole in any attempt to shatter dogma. Suffice it to say that if this is where the average American is learning broad political lessons, great. But if this is where they are getting their facts, not great. I’d hope that after reading it, people might be encouraged to head to their local library to check out some Chomsky or Nader, because there is a reason why this book is in the “Humour” section. And that’s all I’m going to say.
